Roofing in Castle Hill

One suburb, three generations of roof

Castle Hill is not one housing type. The streets around Fred Caterson Reserve and off Old Northern Road still carry plenty of original 1960s and 1970s single-storey brick and tile. Closer to Showground Road and the metro corridor there are large modern two-storey homes with four, six or more roof planes. In between sit the knockdown-rebuilds, where a new Colorbond roof often shares a boundary with a fifty-year-old tile one.

Each gets a different answer, which is why nobody should quote a Castle Hill roof over the phone.

What fails on Castle Hill roofs

The eastern side of the suburb is heavily treed, and Bidjigal Reserve sits just across the way down the Darling Mills Creek catchment. Gum leaf and bark end up in the valleys and gutters year-round.

• Valleys silting up, then valley iron corroding from the bottom metre upwards
• Ridge and hip pointing crazing and lifting on the older tile roofs
• Flashings against two-storey brickwork, especially where an extension changed the roofline
• Gutters backing up behind the fascia and into the eaves rather than overflowing cleanly
• Slipped tiles on steeper pitches after a windy front

Access is a real line item here

The large two-storey homes are where Castle Hill quotes differ most from a flat single-storey suburb. A longer ladder set-up, edge protection on steeper planes and a second person for safe work at height all cost money before a single tile is touched. We separate the access portion from the repair portion in the written quote so you can see which is which.

Note too that Castle Hill straddles the boundary between The Hills Shire and Hornsby Shire. For a like-for-like roof replacement that rarely matters, but it does if your property is heritage listed or you are changing the roof form.
